Latest Campaign News

Thank You Friends

A large number of you contacted the Tallahassee Democrat after its half hearted endorsement of our opponent. Thank you for your eloquent and thoughtful responses. Here is just a small sampling of what you had to say:

Table scraps

I am flabbergasted that the Democrat would endorse a candidate for the sole reason that because a candidate is in the majority party he will have "a seat at the table".  With that logic, we don't need two parties do we?  What happened to the issues?  What happened to the days when the newspaper would compare and contrast the positions of the candidates on substantive matters?   What happened to the days when candidates would be judged on knowledge of the issues, understanding of the political process, and their integrity? When the ability to understand and draft laws made a difference between two candidates?

I don't know both candidates, but I do know Michelle Rehwinkel Vasilinda, and I know that she understands the process, because she teaches it.  She understands the issues because she analyses them in her classes on a daily basis.  She is a very capable communicator who would probably be sought out by her peers for her ability to distill the facts and represent them in a meaningful matter.  That alone should earn her a seat at the table.  But above all, as an ethics professor she is imbued with an integrity that is long needed in politics.  I am sure there was just some error in the copy room and what the Tallahassee Democrat meant to say is that Michelle Rehwinkel Vasilinda is a hard working, honest, and capable candidate who has more to offer her district than the wishful hoping for a seat at the table.

I was shocked to see your endorsement of Peter Boulware over Michelle Rehwinkel Vasilinda, particularly by your rationale:  he has name recognition due to his having been a football player.  Notwithstanding that, in your words,  Ms. Vasilinda teaches ethics and law, has charm and grit, and has worked hard and long to familiarize herself with issues and articulate some solutions to chronic concerns of this district.  What I hear in this endorsement is the epitome of the good ole boys' network, sports taking priority over substantive knowledge of the issues.  Ought we to be reinforcing this in a legislature in a state that is 48th in the country in academic achievement?

Dear Editor,   I dispute the Editorial Board's logic in their choice for State House District 9. The Board stated that Michelle Rehwinkel Vasilinda understands "the intricacies of public policy" and is familiar with the "chronic concerns of this district" but instead endorses the candidate who you admit has "homework yet to do" and "could learn from Professor Rehwinkel Vasilinda." What will be the benefit of the supposed access that you claim Peter Boulware might have if he does not understand the policies and issues important to this community?   Anthony Gaudio   -------------------------------

Dear Editor,

I am writing to support Michelle Rehwinkel Vasilinda as representative for District 9 in the Florida House.  Michelle's assets were noted in the recent Democrat editorial supporting her opponent.  She is very knowledgeable on the issues facing the District and the State, is very hard working, and has extensive experience in the community. Very importantly, she has the openness and positive attitude that will enable her to work across party lines with other elected officials who are seeking to improve the quality of life for residents.

The Democrat's contention that a Republican candidate will better serve the district is presented without any proof or logic.  Loranne Ausley, the current Democratic representative, has been an effective advocate on children's health issues in the Legislature.  As Ms. Ausley pointed out in her October 14 article, a healthy opposition ultimately results in better public policy.  She also notes that our area's delegation currently includes Republicans.  It is unlikely that the presence of one more Republican in the delegation will suddenly result in higher salaries and better benefits for state workers.

I encourage voters in District 9 to support Michelle.  She will be an outstanding representative.

Impressive...Tallahassee Democrat
The Tallahassee Democrat editorial staff says of me: “impressive...with charm and grit,” and “worked long and hard to familiarize herself with issues and articulate solutions to chronic concerns in the district.” They then, however, half-heartedly recommend my opponent simply because he is a Republican. They go on to recognize that  “he has homework yet to do and could learn from Professor Rehwinkel Vasilinda about the intricacies of public policy.” At every turn in their recommendation I am recognized as the better candidate except that I am a Democrat! The editorial staff’s faulty logic flies in the face of one of the enduring principles of our democracy: maintaining a check and balance on power for good government  by and for the people. The board suggests rewarding power with more power is what we need to do now and that it will solve all our problems. I have always been taught absolute power corrupts absolutely.

The Republican Legislature has been in control of our state for over a decade and did not give state employees adequate raises in robust times. It is the Republican Legislature that has outsourced state jobs overseas, done their best to dismantle our schools leaving them embarrassingly at or near the bottom of every meaningful measurement, made it difficult to access health care, and done little to reverse an infant mortality rate that is a tragedy and a sin.

State employees, teachers, and the hard working middle class have been socked in the eye by the GOP. Now the Republicans are wooing us with flowers and candy. “We’re sorry, we promise we’ll change” is the message they are spending more than a half million dollars in this district to convey. Remember, this is the party that called us “Lard Bricks.” Remember, this is the party whose Chairman admitted he tells his child “Republicans go to work and Democrats go to their mailbox for a check.” The flowers and candy will end up crushed on the floor and we’ll end up with another black eye. This editorial board recommends state employees kiss and make up with those who have shown such disrespect and abuse. We deserve better.

The GOP says it wants to run government “like a business.” Their management has been disastrous. The state is in a mess and has gone from a vibrant economy to one that is in real trouble. Consumer confidence in this state is the lowest it has ever been. Our national economy is in the deepest crisis since the Great Depression. Let’s look at our governing decisions like a business: When every leading indicator of a company’s health is plummeting, the directors of that company have an ethical obligation to change leadership that has failed them. We need change not only in our nation but in Florida too.

My message to my Republican friends and colleagues: It is not you, whom I live and work with shoulder to shoulder everyday and who strive with me to do the right things for our community that I criticize. My comments apply to those who pull the strings in your party. They are woefully out of ideas.

This is one of the most educated districts in the state. It would be a shame if, when the goal is in sight, we trade our wisdom and courage for the short end of the stick. I ask you to do the right thing; vote for someone who has lived, worked, and rolled up her sleeves to volunteer beside you for more than two decades. Vote for someone who has raised her children here and perhaps taught your children or grandchildren in her classroom. Vote for someone who has “worked long and hard to familiarize herself with the issues” and who has solutions to resolve them. Vote for me and I promise I’ll use that “charm and grit,” the Democrat says I have, to help us realize the vision we share for an excellent Florida! Thank you. Michelle Rehwinkel Vasilinda.

Woodgate Neighborhood Celebration

Michelle spent more than 4 hours on Saturday, June 28th meeting dozens of really wonderful people at the annual Woodgate neighborhood celebration.  It's clear the people of this neighborhood really care about each other. Residents here have started a Neighbor Helping Neighbor program and Michelle saw it in action as one of the people at breakfast needed help getting home. Breakfast and the burgers were delicious.

Sheriff Larry Campbell's deputies put on a demonstration of K9 Officer Casey's skills that the crowd really enjoyed, including Michelle. Casey is not only beautiful, but we can all feel safer that he is on the force: He really knows his stuff! Donna Walker from the City's Parks and Recreation Department had a table showing off children's and adult's art work created at the Lafayette Arts and Crafts Center. Donna says "come by and join in and let us help you discover your art".

One resident asked Michelle for more information about the recently passed Autism legislation. Michelle didn't have it at the tip of her fingers, but promised an answer. Here's that answer:

The Autism Bill (Senate Bill 2654) requires insurance companies to provide coverage for advanced therapies. It limits the annual benefits to $36,000 dollars a year and sets a life time maximum of $200,000 in benefits. The good news about this legislation is that it allows parents to seek therapy. The legislation applies to all health insurance policies written or renewed after April 1, 2009. Therapies covered include: speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and applied behavior analysis. The legislation also prohibits insurers from denying coverage based on developmental disabilities.

See you next year!

Michelle

Thank You!

I am humbled and honored by the support, trust and  confidence you have shown me.
The closeness of this election is proof that every vote matters, every sign that you waved mattered, every call and neighborhood coffee mattered, and every door you help me knock on mattered.
I'm ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work. Our hard working state employees must be treated fairly;  It is the decent thing to do!
We must invest in our schools and universities and they  must be recognized as the economic engine they are to this state.
With the talented researchers at our fine universities, our district can lead the state and help lead the nation to innovation and energy independence.
Tallahassee must have dependable air service to help us grow and diversify our economy. Finally, no state can call itself successful until its children, its elders, and its sick are well cared for.
My promise to you is that I will work hard and long with all of the people of House District 9 to forge an excellent Florida for all of us!
